It is still early in the NEFHL season but the New York Islanders are looking less and less like a playoff contender.

After 20% of the season, the Islanders sit dead last in their conference and 29th overall.  And there doesn't seem to be much relief in sight.  GM Steve Reisman said "When I look at the team this season, I feel a little depressed.  It's been a good run but it's time to rebuild.  I don't expect to make the playoffs but it's good to see that we're not that far behind the Leafs and Penguins."

After 5 straight seasons of early round post-season losses, GM Steve finally acknowledged that the team needed to be rebuilt from the bottom up and from the top down.  Beginning with the Ales Hemsky trade to the Thrashers, he has methodically dismantled the team while acquiring youth and draft opportunities.

Leaving: Ales Hemsky, Rob Schremp, Wayne Simmonds, Ilya Kovalchuk, Richard Park, Dennis Seidenberg, Erik Ersberg, Scottie Upshall, Jamie Lundmark.

Arriving: James Sheppard, Colton Gillies, Ben Guite, Kenndal McArdell, Alex Pietrangelo, Joe Pavelski, Andrei Kostitsyn, Mark Visentin, Dustin Kohn, Jiri Hudler and a boatload of picks.

Over the next two seasons, the Islanders will be picking early and often in the drafts.
