Giordano to be Named Loyalty

Mark Giordano will be tagged as the loyalty for the Devils this summer, meaning Jussi Jokinen will be allowed to file for unrestricted free agency. The team is happy with what Jokinen has provided in terms of production the last two seasons, however his dissapearances in the playoffs have left a negative taste in the lockerroom.

Jokinen was 4th on the team last year with 70 points, quite the production as he slotted all season between the 1st and 2nd line and was a very important player with the man advantage. Unfortunately once the playoffs rolled around, most of the the team beyond the top line was shut down - starting with Jokinen. His paltry 4 goals and 10 points, as well as a -6 just didn't cut it and it was thought he would be placed on waivers at the start of the 2012-2013 season. However, he had a solid preseason and great start to the regular season and managed to finnish the season with 19 goals and 52 points. A solid season even if he got less icetime as the season went along. Once again in the playoffs he dissapeared with only 2 assists in the 11 games. While most of the team struggled in those 11 games, something has to change and the team feels it will be Jokinen. He is still a solid goal scorer wih speed and defensive awareness however the team wants to get his lack of playoff drive off the team.

Giordano will hopefully sign a 4 year contract with the team when offers are permitted and the Devils look forward to slotting him into the top 4 again this season. While Giordano started the season on fire last year, he slowed a ton as the season dragged on like most of the teams defensemen. Despite this, he stil managed to finish tied for 2nd on the team with 39 points but his 14 goals led the team from the back end. Even though he was a minus 3 on the year the team feels that doesn't reflect his actual talent as he helped anchor the PK that was tops in the league at 90.3% (next highest was 88.5%). A good skating and somewhat physical defenseman, the team hopes he can anchor the D next year and play a key role in going for the division again.
