Its a small grade between being a succesfull hockey club now and having enough pieces for a promising future. "Building a hockey team needs much more work than building a house", smiled GM Matt Kaminski, who was celebrating his 35th birthday in Amsterdam/Netherlands.
His team - the NEFHL Rangers - have become a consistent playoff team in the NEFHL since Kaminski took over. But taking the next step is the biggest challenge for Kaminski and his staff. "We want to improve step by step, but its a very difficult path not only becoming a playoff team, but also being succesful in the postseason."
"We probably have solid futures to keep our level, but we need an extra gear." The 2014/15 will be comparable to the last one. "We wont be bad, but we also wont be extraordinary good."
The Rangers own excellent goaltending: The tandem of Carey Price and Ray Emery is definitely above average. The Rangers D lacks top end quality but looks solid at the moment. "We need to improve our goals against average. With Careys new ratings that should become possible, but we need to help him with solid defensive play", added Kaminski.
Upfront the Rangers also missing high end forwards, but they are capabale of scoring goals. The new go to guy will probably be Kyle Okposo who owns exciting offensive ratings. "The challenge will be to find some chemistry and creating solid special teams."
The Rangers 2014/15 at the moment before free agency:
E. Kane - Elias - Okposo
Glencross - Soderberg - Brouwer
Killorn - Cullen - Wingels
Moen - Byron - McDonald
Murray - Daley
Tyutin - Spurgeon
Gorges - Goligoski
Liles - Schlemko
Price - Emery
"We definitely have some areas to improve, but we also like what we have."
The Rangers also own some future depth:
Chase De Leo
