Through the first 30 games the Devils were a mediocre .500 team despite having almost no games lost to injury. Now, through the last 3 games the Devils have had six injuries, four which have kept forwards out for upcoming games. The team is without top line winger Bobby Ryan for 3 weeks while 2nd line LW Boone Jenner will miss a couple of games as well. To make matters worse, lower depth players like Jordan Caron and Aaron Palushaj have also missed games with injuries. This has led the team to make some emergency recalls of farm players JT Brown and recently signed Alex Kerfoot.
The Devils came back to New Jersey to face the Islanders with the depleted lineup and got some scoring from unexpected areas. Not only did Kerfoot score his first career goal at the end of the game but 4th liner Matt Fraser managed to get his 2nd and 3rd goals of the year and also added an assist in the 3rd period. Even though it was against one of the lower teams in the standings it was still great to see the less talented players on the roster step up in big ways and dominating 5 on 5. Colin Wilson also managed to pick up a couple of assists and finish at a season high +4 on the game, bumping him back into plus territory on the year.
With Caron and Jenner still day to day, Luke Adam has been called up to slot in on the 3rd line while Alex Kerfoot will go back to the farm team despite his goal. The team will still run with 7 defenseman for the time being with the 3 forwards still out. With the team hovering on the bubble of the playoffs the team is hoping for more scoring from unlikely sources in the upcoming games until the team gets healthy again. While the Rangers and Penguins are running away with the division the Devils are hoping to hang onto a playoff spot as the season goes along.
