The Bruins put an exclamation on the season by trading Pavel Datsyuk and Patrick Hornquist to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Max Pacioretty and prospect defenseman Jordan Subban. While the deal weakens the Bruins this season, long term it makes the Bruins better. And that was the goal. Boston has been all over the board this season winning some, losing more and haven't been able to get a consistent effort from game to game. Dats was brought in during the offseason and was seen as a major piece, but when the Bruins lost Jeff Carter to UFA, the trickle down effect was big.
The team never seemed to be able to compete with the top teams and currently sit outside the playoffs. While the Bruins haven't completely thrown in the towel, partly due to the fact they don't own their 1st round pick, the team isn't trying to do any moves that don't improve the team long term. The addition of maxpac won't hurt, as well the team added Weiss up the middle to help alleviate the pressure on Schenn. With the loyalty slated for Corey Crawford who will remain a top 5 rated tender the team will look to improve the depth and defense with the remaining time before the trade deadline and next offseason.
Next year the Bruins will have a nice top 4 wingers including MaxPac, Neal, Nyquist and Ward. Schenn will be back and the team will be in the market to add another center. While it hasn't been fun to tred water this season, the team is looking forward to the next couple weeks and offseason that will likely set the direction for this team moving forward.
