In the opening game of the regular season the Jackets were able to put on an electric goal filled performance for their fans as they beat the Islanders 8-5. While the defence and the goalies on both teams were pleased with how the game was turning out forwards were loving it out there. Franchise player Nikita Kucherov put up 1 goal and 3 assists, newly acquired brusier Nick Ritchie put up 1 goal and 2 assists, and many others joined in on the fun. Rookie tendy Gilles Sen was able to keep the puck out of the net for 24 minutes and recorded his first career NEFHL victory so that was cool as well. But after the game the question that the Jackets had coming into the season still remained, what now?

Jackets GM Blake MacPherson has made it very public he was disgusted with the teams performance in last years playoffs and the team was given a shakeup. They wanted to bring back Jeff Petry but it just wasn't in the budget and they deemed TJ Oshie as a higer priority. The Jackets are a sqaud that on paper doesn't look like a playoff team, even with high level forwards such as Kucherov, Lindholm, Oshie and Teravainen it will be an uphill battle if they even want to come close. Rumors have persisted that come trade deadline that Teravainen could be shipped off, but take this with a grain of salt as the Jackets love what Teravainen brings to the table. Will it suck if the Jackets miss the playoffs? Very much so. Is a potential lottery puck what the doctor ordered to help build up this teams core again? I think the answer to that is once again yes. While the Jackets likely won't burn it down as a franchise piece like Kucherov and a top flight center such as Lindholm aren't exactly easy assets to come by, the Jackets will retool and try to build up a young core around these two. This season the Jackets will be in a spot that no team ever wants to be, in limbo. The Jackets aren't terrible, but they aren't good as well. It will be interesting to see if Kucherov can once again put the team on his back and bring the Jacekts back to the playoffs.
