A terrific dogfight has emerged in the NEFHL Eastern Conference this season. Only 6 points separate the entire contingent of playoff eligible teams (and only 3 points between 1st and 7th) as of this morning. By comparison, the Western conference playoff picture has a spread of 14 points from 1st to 8th.

Toronto, on the outside looking in, matches the Rangers total. Although they have played 3 more games than the rest of the pack they still won on Sunday despite declaring that the towel was being thrown in.

With 3 teams tied at the top with 73 points, the Sabres have a slight edge of a game in hand. Buffalo has lost the fewest games in the entire league with just 15 defeats.

Both the Panthers and Devils have games in hand at 72 points and the Devils are the hottest team in the entire league right now, riding an 8 games winning streak. On Sunday, the Devils crushed the 2nd place BlueJackets, scoring 9 goals, embarrassing both Semian Varlomov and Gilles Senn.

Meanwhile, the Islanders, Flyers and Rangers are all sitting on 3 games winning streaks. The flyers and Ranger are both hot hot hot right now having each lost only once in regulation in the past 10 games.

The trade deadline is approaching, with GMs looking to make any move that can possibly be the difference maker. We can look forward to an active deal deadline as offers clog the inboxes and phonelines. Will the defending champion cup-holding Florida Panthers pull off a deal that puts them in position for a possible repeat? Will the Sabres manage to complete a wire-to-wire conference leading season?

There seems to be little question that this is a historic race at the moment and promises to be a nail-biter right down to the wire.

Stay tuned!!
