The summer is winding down. Offseason is turning into pre-season. Rosters are starting to come together league wide. General Managers are eyeing their cap situations and getting compliant. Minnesota is no different.
``Let`s be real here. Minnesota won`t be winning the cup this year`` GM Peter said with a chuckle, ``I know it, the players know it, the coaches know it, the fans know it, the rest of the league knows it. The Russians spying on the NEFHL know it too. But it`s just another step to getting where we want to be. We are ready for the pre-season. Our young guys are going to get ice-time. We will try to ice our best roster. Lots of learning, growth and development from them this season. Think of it as on-the-job experience for when it matters. You will see some guys lose their waiver eligibility before it`s even necessary. That`s ok. Those guys aren`t going anywhere.``
As of now the pre-season line up and most likely starting roster for the 2018-2019 campaign will be the following:
Jake DeBrusk - Bryan Little – Ondrej Kase
Jujhar Khaira - Nick Cousins – Mike Cammalleri
Alex Chiasson -Jay Beagle – Kevin Labanc
Chandler Stephenson - J.S. Dea – Ales Hemsky
X: Boo Nieves
John Carlson – Braydon Coburn
Marc Methot – Josh Morrissey
Zach Bogosian – Christian Djoos
X: Andrew Hammond
Total Cap according to the team page : $38.5 m
With a pro roster looking thin on talent, especially in comparison to the western conference which is getting strong and stronger every year, the remaining cap space should be enticing to a couple of free agent defensemen that have not signed any deals this summer. Kris Letang or Mark Giordano would both bring much needed talent and experience to the locker room. Neither would be enough to propel the team to the promised land, however, those two also need to make a decision on whether they want to play and get paid at all this season.
``We have the roster space and the cap space. We don`t have a championship calibre team. At this point in the summer, those teams are likely out of the running due to lack of cap space. And these players want to get paid. I haven`t bid for them all summer. They`re still available. I said earlier this summer I was going into Free Agency eyeing 3 goalies for the short term, and I signed 3 goalies for the short term. Now I am eyeing one of these defensemen to start the season in the State of Hockey. We will see what happens.``
