In the first round of free agency, the Flyers have signed three: Brian Boyle and Matt Cullen up front, and Luke Schenn returns on defense.
Luke Schenn will return to be one of those 6 defense, after a strong showing in the 2nd half of last season. He was +6 with 201 hits over just 51 games. He's a rare breed with his very high intensity and strength, but also good speed and defense, with decent puck control to boot. He will be an important part of the team even strength. His FHL OV is a 77OV, but AOV only a 72 so were able to sign him for an affordable $2.2 million.
Brian Boyle will likely be one of the best free agent forward signings that happen this year. At just $2.5 million for the season, on a no risk 1 year deal, Boyle is a steal. He's an intense, massive, goal scoring, power-forward that can play in his own end... He'll slot perfectly into the middle six and fill in any role that is needed of him.
Matt Cullen was the third signing, grabbing a cheap $750k deal to try and win a cup before he retires. Cullen was targeted for his experience and leadership. He'll likely slot in as the 4th line LW, adding further leadership through the lineup.
Then few different moves moving our more depth prospects to regain some mid-late picks:
Cameron Hebig, Dennis Yan and Michael McCarron to Columbus Blue Jackets for CBJ 2020 Rnd 4
Buffalo Sabres trade VGK 2021 Rnd 6 to Philadelphia Flyers for Rodrigo Abols
Ottawa Senators trade OTT 2021 Rnd 7 to Philadelphia Flyers for Kole Sherwood
The Flyers are now at a 44 player roster with a salary cap hit under $44 million. One thought is to have a veteran on each line to ensure consistency - a problem they had on lines that didn't have Getzlaf or Marleau last season. Here are the current thoughts to what the lineup might look like (with AOV):
RNH-Toews-Rantanen (76, 81, 80)
Marleau-Aho-Wilson (74, 77, 78)
Boyle-Getzlaf-Silfverberg (75, 77, 74)
Cullen-Smith-Maroon (69, 71, 71)
Ekholm-Dillon (76, 74)
Brodin-Schenn (72, 73)
Hunt-Folin (71, 71)
