With only 5-6 games remaining in the season the battle for the Wild West will soon be coming to a close. The battle however, is still far from being decided. With only theSharks and Flames having clinched as many as 6 spots are still open. Although both the Kings and Avs have pretty much assured their positions in the post-apocalyptic playoff landscape even if they haven’t mathematically clinched. This still leaves the Blues, Blue Jackets, Coyotes, Wings, Oilers, Stars, and Hawks vying for the last 4 spots.
Some interesting facts - the 7 teams vying for the last 4 spots actually play each other 14 of their 38 remaining games. These “4 point games” are going to go a long way towards deciding who’s in and who’s out. Reinforcing the fact that this is still far from over.
Edmonton has 2 of their remaining 5 games against one of the 6 other teams.
Dallas has 3 of their remaining 5 games against one of the 6 other teams.
Columbus has 2 of their remaining 5 games against one of the 6 other teams.
St.Louis has 3 of their remaining 6 games against one of the 6 other teams.
Chicago has 2 of their remaining 6 games against one of the 6 other teams.
Detroit only has 1 of their 6 remaining games against one of the other 6 teams.
Arizona only has 1 of their 5 remaining games against one of the other 6 teams.
To help everyone keep track, here are the remaining 4 point games:
Sunday March 25th
Edmonton at Dallas
Calgary at Colorado – With the Avs trailing the Flames by only 4 points and with a game in hand the battle for the Northwest could be decided with this game.
Monday March 26th
Columbus at St-Louis - Not only a battle for one the final playoff spots but a battle for the Central as well. The blues and Jackets are currently tied with the Blues holding a game in hand.
Tuesday March 27th
Dallas at St-Louis
Edmonton at Arizona
Wed March 28th
Chicago at Dallas
San Jose at Calgary - Sure why not? The battle for the top spot overall in the west may just come down to this game.
Thursday March 29th
Columbus at Detroit
Sunday April 1st
St-Louis at Chicago
Other notes of interest – the Stars are in free fall at 2-7-1 in their last 10. The Wings are just slightly better at 3-4-3. The Blue Jackets, once comfortably on top of the Central are losers of their last 3. The Oilers with their playoff futures on the line can’t even get themselves to play .500 hockey, going 4-5-1 in their last 10. The Hawks are playing just a tad better at 5-5 in their last 10 but at least winners of their last 2.
With mediocre play like that no wonder the west won’t be decided until the last day of the season.
