The Capitals are starting reap the rewards of their heavily hyped prospects, as Nick Suzuki is an emerging young star. While others such as Wyatt Kalynuk, Calen Addison, Rasmus Sandin, Timothy Liljegren, and Nick Robertson(the latter there just signed entry contracts with the Capitals) likely make their debuts with the Capitals sometime this season. While there is a chance we might see Jamie Drysdale and/or stud Cole Caufield find their way onto the roster possibly by the end of the year If they become needed. So many up and coming prospects including last years 8th overall draft pick Marco Rossi who should be ready as early as 2022. The Capitals could end up with another stud in a months time at the draft picking 2nd overall.
After winning the Lottery for 2nd overall the Capitals moved up one spot. In a draft full of uncertainty the Capitals have their hands full to do every little bit of due diligence on all players. This however isn't a weak draft, it''s one that hasn't been able to shine with all the uncertainty going on in the world today. A lot of showcase tournaments have been missed for a lot of these guys and some even missed out because of covid( like Eklund). So it makes it hard, but the feeling is great players transcend regardless and make their opportunities count.
Here are the likely top 5 picks and their comparison(high end)
Owen Power- Victor Hedman
Matt Beniers - Jonathan Toews
William Eklund - Henrik Zetterberg
Dylan Guenther - Mikko Rantanen
Kent Johnson - Elias Petterson
based on the comparisons they all look good but finding someone that will hit or surpass them is the challenge we as an orgazation will have to figure out. Only one of those players will be gone but it also doesn't mean our top option will be. Good luck to everyone on draft night...and just like my current prospects and youngsters; You'll hear a lot about this 2nd overall pick too. 😉
